The San Antonio Spurs are a professional basketball team based in San Antonio, Texas. They are members of the Western Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team plays its home games at the AT&T Center in downtown San Antonio. The Spurs are one of four former American Basketball Association teams to remain intact in the NBA after the 1976 ABA, joining the Indiana Pacers, New York Nets (now Brooklyn) and Denver Nuggets.
The Spurs have won five NBA championships, more than any other team in the Western Conference since 1976. The franchise has also won 19 division titles in that time period, second only to the Los Angeles Lakers. As of 2018, the Spurs have the highest winning percentage of any team in NBA history. They are also the only team in any of the four major North American sports leagues (MLB, NBA, NHL, NFL) to have never lost a playoff series in their entire existence. The Spurs currently have the longest active winning streak in the NBA, having won 19 games straight as of March 20th, 2019.
The Spurs began as the Dallas Chaparrals, an expansion team in the American Basketball Association (ABA) that originally played in Dallas. Coached by Cliff Hagan, the team compiled a 67 23 win-loss record in their three ABA seasons, winning the ABA Championship in 1971. The team moved to San Antonio in 1973 and adopted the “Spurs” name. The team dropped “Dallas” from their name and becoming the San Antonio Spurs.
In 1976, the league merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Spurs joined the NBA along with three other ABA teams, the Indiana Pacers, New York Nets (now Brooklyn) and Denver Nuggets. The Spurs finished their inaugural NBA season with a 44 38 win-loss record. They qualified for the playoffs but were swept in the first round by the eventual Eastern Conference champions, the Philadelphia 76ers.
