The Cleveland Cavaliers, also known as the Cavs, are an American professional basketball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cavaliers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Central Division. The team began to play as an expansion team in 1970, along with the Portland Trail Blazers and Buffalo Braves. Home games were first held at Cleveland Arena from 1970 to 1974, followed by the Richfield Coliseum from 1974 to 1994. Since 1994, the Cavs have played their home games at Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland, which is shared with the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League (AFL) and the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League (AHL). The franchise won its first NBA Championship in 2016.
The Cavaliers have made 22 playoff appearances and won seven Central Division titles, five Eastern Conference titles, and one NBA title. LeBron James led the team to their first Finals appearance in 2007, where they lost the series to the San Antonio Spurs.
The Cavaliers have had a rivalry with the Detroit Pistons since the late 1980s. The two teams faced each other in the playoffs six times from 1988 to 2004, with the Cavs winning four of those series. The rivalry reached its peak when they met in the Eastern Conference Finals in 2007, with the Pistons winning four games to two. It was renewed in 2014 when the Cavs and Pistons faced each other in the first round, with the Cavs winning in four games.
